In 1968, Theodore C. Merritt, Sr. conceived the idea of the historic
Liberty Village in Flemington, NJ, and asked Jerry Vandermark, from
the Jamestown Glasshouse in Virginia, to consult on the design of the
glass house. Jerry ended up taking Merritt's young son, Doug, back with
him to Jamestown where he taught him to blow glass.
The Vandermark Glasshouse at Liberty Village evolved from producing
replicas of 18th century glassware to more wide-ranging reproductions,
and then added some original art glass designs. In 1981, when Liberty
Village was sold, the Vandermark Merritt Studios were incorporated.
Since that time, these young men have continued to develop new designs
and shapes, creating their own colors and designs through experimentation.
The small beginning in a reproduction glass factory, with the guidance
of Gerald Vandermark, was evolved into the current studio, producing
distinctive and magnificent pieces
